SYNOPSIS: This workshop is for Care staff working in both residential and community aged care services. It will explore a Carer’s requirement and responsibility in maintaining skin integrity to provide the best possible care for the client. Skin care is an essential part of the carer’s working day. They are an integral part of the care team in managing and preventing skin-related issues for patients/clients/residents. This workshop starts with the elements of managing skin to maintain integrity. We explore what happens to skin as we age and the strategies that we can use to keep it intact. The second part of the workshop focuses on damaged skin and the knowledge and strategies that Care staff can use to manage this. The session will include pressure injuries – the signs that damage has occurred and how to prevent this. The focus is on working as part of the team to ensure the use of best practice strategies. Finally, we will explore skin tears and other wounds that Care staff are usually the first to see. The session will review first aid strategies that Care staff can employ and then move on to monitoring a wound and critical knowledge required when looking after a person with a wound. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At this workshop, you will: – Discuss the importance of skin care and the carer’s role as part of the health care team – Explore skin cleansing, moisturising and managing frail and vulnerable skin – Gain an understanding of the prevention & development of pressure injuries – Explore first aid for skin tears & managing skin when a person has a wound
