A new culturally safe dementia resource is supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and carers across Central Queensland, Wide Bay and the Sunshine Coast to navigate dementia with greater confidence, connection and cultural support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience dementia at higher rates and at younger ages than the general population. Accessible, community-centred resources play an important role in supporting earlier understanding, care planning and connection to family, community and culture.
The latest edition of Living Well with Dementia: My Journal is one of two locally developed dementia journals coordinated by Country to Coast Queensland. The journal provides practical information in a culturally respectful format, and includes:
- space to record important health details
- tools to support yarning with your family, GPs and other health professionals
- prompts to help people stay connected to what matters most.
Health workers and community members can order free copies of the local dementia journals at c2coast.org.au/dementia-resources/aboriginal-journal
Thank you to the people living with dementia, their families and service providers who guided the development of this journal. Thank you, also, to the Elders, community members and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) for their contributions to the development of this journal. Funding was provided by the Australian Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
