Announced on 2 January by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Australians can now access free health information and advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422).
If you’re feeling unwell, caring for someone, or not sure what to do next, call 1800MEDICARE to speak with a registered nurse who can:
- listen to what’s going on
- assess your symptoms
- guide you to the right next step, whether that’s self care at home or help from a local GP, Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, pharmacy or emergency department in your area
For emergencies, call Triple Zero (000).
Why use 1800MEDICARE
- Immediate advice for non emergency health concerns, when you’re not sure where to start
- 24/7 access to registered nurses who can guide you to the right care
- Available Australia wide, with support through phone and digital channels
Along with the phone service, 1800MEDICARE also includes a website and app. The service is free and available to anyone, anywhere in Australia. You do not need a Medicare card to use it.
1800MEDICARE is part of the Strengthening Medicare initiative, which aims to simplify access to care, improve equity and reduce pressure on emergency departments.
