IV Cannulation and Iron Infusion

Develop knowledge around the role of iron in blood and learn practical skills for iv cannulation insertion, maintenance and removal that will support the appropriate clinical treatment for your patient. Understanding the risks and benefits of iron infusion, and considerations for good technique for safe practice for iv cannula insertion and removal.

Learning Outcomes

  • Assess the need for cannulation and correctly identify pathology requests.
  • Perform peripheral intravenous cannulation.
  • Choose the appropriate size cannula.
  • Discuss the considerations that influence the correct selection of intravenous cannula size and insertion site.
  • Demonstrate the technique of peripheral intravenous cannula insertion, including securing the cannula insitu.
  • Trouble shoot problems.
  • Manage the cannula until the time it is no longer required and removal of the cannula is to be performed.
  • Safely remove the intravenous cannula.
  • Discuss and manage possible complications.
  • Understand the role of iron in the blood.
  • Understand the elements of iron deficiency.
  • Understand the risks of iron infusions.
  • Gain understanding of iron infusion in practice.
