Women, girls and people assigned female at birth in Rockhampton and surrounding communities will have greater access to care for persistent pelvic pain, painful periods, endometriosis and menopause-related symptoms, with new Australian Government funding supporting additional services across two local clinic sites.
Country to Coast Queensland has today announced the Rockhampton Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Service, led by True Relationships and Reproductive Health and delivered in partnership with Evoca Women’s Health.
As the Primary Health Network for Central Queensland, Wide Bay and the Sunshine Coast, Country to Coast Queensland has contracted the local providers and is supporting the local rollout of the service.
The Rockhampton service is part of the Australian Government’s national network of 33 Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinics, established to improve access to timely assessment, diagnosis, treatment and referral pathways closer to home.
Endometriosis is a chronic condition that can cause severe period pain, persistent pelvic pain, fatigue and fertility issues. It affects at least one in seven girls, women and people assigned female at birth in Australia, yet many people wait an average of six to eight years from symptom onset to diagnosis.
Country to Coast Queensland CEO Julie Sturgess welcomed the announcement and said the funding would help improve access to diagnosis treatment and referral services for people experiencing pelvic pain and related conditions.
“For too long, pelvic pain has been normalised or dismissed, leaving many people waiting years for answers and support,” Ms Sturgess said.
“This service is about improving access to timely, specialised care in Rockhampton, so more people can be heard, supported and connected with the right care sooner.
“It will also help strengthen local referral pathways by raising awareness among GPs and other healthcare providers, making it easier to connect patients with specialist care and improving access to evidence-based information and resources.”
Ms Sturgess said Rockhampton was identified as a priority location because of local health need, including high rates of emergency department presentations for endometriosis and pelvic pain across the Central Queensland region.
The Rockhampton service will use a multidisciplinary model of care, with support from specialised general practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and other allied health professionals where clinically appropriate.
Donna Bonney, Chief Executive Officer, True Relationships and Reproductive Health shared, “True has been a trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health services in the Rockhampton community for more than 50 years. This funding is a welcome opportunity to expand access to specialised endometriosis, pelvic pain and menopause support for local women.”
“We have been providing similar specialised clinics in Cairns and via outreach in Blackall. The community need for this expert care and tailored support continues to grow as awareness and understanding of endometriosis, pelvic pain and menopause also grows.”
“There is still so much more to do in terms of research, education and appropriate clinical care. We’re proud to be at the forefront of that in Queensland, and advocating for and supporting our community.”
Kim Pryce-Lunt, Queensland Director, Evoca Women’s Health said, ‘At Evoca, we’re passionate about ensuring women experiencing endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain have access to timely, evidence-based, multidisciplinary care.
“Partnering in the EPPC model allows us to bring specialist expertise closer to the community, reduce delays in diagnosis and, most importantly, improve quality of life for women who have often spent years searching for answers.”
Patients can be referred by their GP or healthcare provider, or contact the service directly to ask about self-referral options. Telehealth options may also be available.
