Cancer Screening Education for General Practitioners
Event Details
Evidence shows that the most influential factor to patient participation in population-based preventative screening programs is a recommendation from a General Practitioner (GP). This course aims to provide information, resources, and tools to support GPs and their practice in their ongoing role to promote, encourage, and manage cancer screening according to evidence-based guidelines.
National cancer screening programs save lives. GPs are the first port of call in the health care system and have a central role in the success of the three national cancer screening programs, BreastScreen Australia, the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program and the National Cervical Screening Program. True has developed a multi-modal education package with the most up-to-date information, resources, and tools to support GPs and practice staff in encouraging patient participation in these programs.
All activities will be hosted on True Relationships & Reproductive Health’s LMS, LearnBook.
The Cancer Screening Education for General Practitioners consists of:
- A predisposing activity: An in-practice, face-to-face introductory session on Australia’s National Cancer Screening Programs or watch the recorded presentation in addition to a self-reflective survey.
- 10 x self-paced, eLearning modules on various topics across the three national screening programs (released from Dec 2019 – March 2020):

- 1 x in-depth webinar on cervical cancer and symptoms
- 1 x podcast on breast screening (released from Jan – June 2020)
- 1 x podcast on bowel cancer screening (released from Jan – June 2020)
- An online resource hub full of toolkits and resources
- An online, anonymous moderated forum where GPs can ask questions direct to our expert clinicians
- A reinforcing activity and evaluation
The course has been designed to be accessed online and in your own time. GPs can choose individual activities to meet their own learning needs or to complete the entire package of education.
This education is a CPD Accredited Activity under the RACGP CPD Program.**Upon completion of the 10 eLearning modules.

At the completion of this course you will be able to:
- Determine patient’s eligibility for each of the three National Cancer Screening Programs
- Recommend eligible patients to participate in the national cancer screening programs by explaining the benefits and addressing barriers to screening
- Use tools and resources to assist patients to understand their risk of cancer
- Follow evidence-based pathways to manage patients with symptoms or signs of cancer
- Implement systems and tools in your practice to encourage and record participation in the national cancer screening programs
This course aims to provide up-to-date information, resources, and tools to support GPs and their practice in their ongoing role to promote, encourage, and manage cancer screening according to evidence-based guidelines.
