Part 1 – Physiology and Pharmacology of Oral Contraception
Understanding the science behind oral contraception is the basis for appropriate prescribing

In this presentation, well-known women’s health expert Dr Terri Foran outlines the basic physiology that underpins female fertility and the targets for oral contraception. She will outline how the various pharmacological agents work, comparing effectiveness as well as safety issues to ensure prescribing clinicians can make evidenced-based decisions for each individual patient who wants to avoid falling pregnant.

Part 2 – Basic and Intermediate Prescription of Oral Contraception
Prescribing oral contraception: Who, what, and why?

There are a plethora of choices when it comes to oral contraception. Knowing which option is best for which patient can be tricky. In this talk, Dr Terri Foran will outline a practical framework which will help guide GPs through this decision-making process, so they can be confident their patient is prescribed the most appropriate pill for them. Understanding common side effects and how to manage them, adjust dosage or trial a different agent or combination of agents will be covered.

Oral contraception in the real world

How can we use the OCP in women with a history of DVT, migraine or perimenopause? As in so many areas of medicine, what happens in the real world isn’t always covered in the textbooks. In this forum, chaired by Dr Terri Foran, listen to the opinions of three leading experts in the field as they discuss how to manage some of the many challenges clinicians face when dealing with a woman’s contraception, including traps and tips that they have learned through experience.

Dr Teri Foran
Dr Terri Foran is a Sexual Health Physician and holds the position of Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the School of Women’s and Children’s Health at UNSW Sydney. She has a private clinical practice in Darlinghurst and is engaged in clinical and research work at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney.

Dr Deborah Bateson
Deborah has worked as a clinician, educator, researcher and advocate in sexual and reproductive health for 20 years. She is Medical Director of Family Planning NSW, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Social Research in Health at UNSW.  

Assoc Prof Rod Baber
Rod Baber is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The University of Sydney and operates a specialist Gynaecology and Reproductive Endocrinology practice based on Sydney’s lower north shore. He also heads the menopause and menstrual disorders clinic at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dr Lina Safro
Dr Lina Safro is a GP with a deep interest in all things women’s health. She works at Family Planning NSW clinics, Marie Stopes clinics, and also covers the on-call roster at RPAH for victims of sexual assault. Lina is highly involved in clinical education of GPs, including overseas-trained doctors
