Importance of managing pain in the elderly and the priority for appropriate wound care in residential aged care.

3rd year nursing students will undertake a final clinical placement at Lutheran Services Cooinda Aged Care prior to completion of their degrees. The Transition to Practice Program is supported by a series of seminars on aged-related topics to be presented by academics and industry experts to assist the students in their chosen career path.

The Lunchbox Lectures are available to everyone and will allow you to learn how UniSC and Lutheran Services wish to support the development of the Aged Care sector in the future as well as strengthen your knowledge of key age-related health topics.

Topic 1: Residential aged care and Pain.

Residents of aged care communities are vulnerable to the debilitating effects of pain which can manifest in several ways. Our awareness and attitude towards pain in the elderly is imperative for both appropriate management and the best possible outcomes. Pain medication is not necessarily always the best choice and non-pharmacological pain relief can be supported by proper pain analysis.

Presenter: Jen Algie is a Physiotherapist and the Allied Health Manager at Cooinda, Lutheran Services.

Her years of experience, combined with her education and skills means that she is a passionate advocate for the health and wellbeing of the residents under her care. She understands that everyone experiences pain differently and there is no one means of treating pain. Pain relief is as individual as her clients.

Topic 2: Wounds and Wound management in the residential aged care facility

This presentation will share information on the several types of wounds and will explore why they can be hard to manage in the elderly. Wound care is now a specialised nurse role; however, excellent teamwork is required for best client outcomes when it comes to healing of wounds amongst residents of aged care facilities.

Presenter: Henrietta Martin is a registered nurse who is the Wound Management / Stomal Therapy Clinical Nurse Consultant for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services. Henrietta has certificates in Critical Care, Emergency Care and Stomal Therapy and has a Masters of Nursing in Clinical Leadership. Henrietta’s expertise on wound management and how to seek help when dealing with wounds seen in residential aged care will be enlightening.
