CCQ RACH Telehealth Support Grant helps Wahroonga Aged Care

In Sunshine Coast by PHN Communications

Residential Aged Care Facility Telehealth Support Grants were communicated by Country to Coast, QLD in May 2023 as part of the Commonwealth’s response to Aged Care Reform. Telehealth grants increase the availability and use of telehealth for residents living in aged care homes and, aim to reduce avoidable hospital presentations.

Wahroonga Aged Care a 60-bed aged care facility in the heart of Biloela is proud to be one of the recipients of the CCQ Telehealth Support Grant, part of the Commonwealth’s response to Aged Care Reform. This initiative aims to increase the availability and use of Telehealth services for residents in aged care homes, ultimately reducing avoidable hospital visits.

With the support of this grant, Wahroonga Aged Care successfully implemented a mobile Telehealth technology setup, which has fostered a new partnership with a Geriatrician from Infinity Specialists in Toowoomba. Although not all the Telehealth equipment has arrived yet, already it has significantly impacted resident care by enhancing accessibility to specialist services, complementing and supporting ongoing local GP care.

Wahroonga Aged Care Clinical Manager, Amanda Hicks proudly shows how the CCQ Telehealth Grant has helped residents in Biloela.

Clinical Manager Amanda Hicks shared her enthusiasm, sharing, “Our residents are enjoying having the iPads, allowing them to talk to their doctor directly.” This technology allows for real-time consultations, enabling residents to engage with healthcare professionals in a way that was previously unavailable.

Feedback from the Geriatrician highlights the success of this initiative: “Many thanks and appreciations; the appointments went really well.” The Telehealth system not only facilitates communication but also allows doctors to conduct comprehensive assessments. For instance, physicians can visually observe residents and encourage them to perform simple movements, enhancing physical evaluations.

The introduction of Telehealth at Wahroonga Aged Care demonstrates a proactive approach to healthcare, prioritising the well-being of residents and improving their overall quality of life. By leveraging technology to connect with specialists, Wahroonga is paving the way for more effective and accessible healthcare solutions within the aged care sector.
