Event Details

Overview
GPs have a key role to play in stroke prevention and in minimising its potentially devastating impact if it does occur. This program will assist GPs in proactively identifying patients within their practice who are at increased risk of stroke and systematically implementing guideline-based management approaches to reduce stroke risk. It will also assist GPs in developing strategies to educate their staff and patients on recognising the signs and symptoms of stroke and the need for rapid action. The program will help GPs by identifying the acute stroke resources in their area and the options which might be considered for their patients suffering an acute stroke.

Activity Number 234068
This RACGP and ACCRM accredited program, supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, has been developed by an independent steering committee in collaboration with the Stroke Foundation.

The program
The program consists of three components:

  • Module 1: Stroke prevention in general practice
Online pre-work (1 hour) – you will gain access to this upon registering for the program
A hypothetical case study is used to examine stroke risk factors and best practice approach to management in general practice.
  • Module 2: Stroke management in general practice – Wednesday 12th May 2021 (Urangan Hervey Bay)
    Live meeting (1.5 hours)
Presented by a leading Australian neurologist, a hypothetical case study is used to assist GPs in reducing risk of stroke in patients they see everyday, including expert opinions on how to manage patients not always included in the guidelines, developing strategies to educate your staff and patients on recognising the signs and symptoms of stroke and the need for rapid action.
  • Module 3: Stroke prevention protocol in your practice
    In-practice activity (3.5 hours)
Put what you have learnt into action by proactively identifying patients within your practice who are at increased risk of stroke and systematically implement guideline-based management approaches to reduce stroke risk and provide patient education. Learn about the resources the Stroke Foundation have to help and your patients with the stroke pathway.

Learning outcomes
At the conclusion of the full educational program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the serious burden of stroke in Australia and the challenges that need to be overcome to reduce this burden
  • Proactively identify patients at increased risk of stroke within their practice
  • Implement guideline-based management approaches to reduce risk of stroke in both patients at risk for stroke and those who have had a prior stroke
