Importance of Falls Prevention & Management Strategies in Residential Aged Care Facilities.

Social isolation in Residential Aged Care Facilities and novel mitigation strategies.

About this Event
3rd year nursing students will undertake a final clinical placement at Lutheran Services Cooinda Aged Care prior to completion of their degrees. The Transition to Practice Program is supported by a series of seminars on aged-related topics to be presented by academics and industry experts to assist the students in their chosen career path.

The Lunchbox Lectures are available to everyone and will allow you to learn how UniSC and Lutheran Services wish to support the development of the Aged Care sector in the future as well as strengthen
your knowledge of key age-related health topics.

Topic 1: Preventing falls is everyone’s business
Falls can have a significant impact on not only the individual, but also family, friends and healthcare
providers. Older residents of aged care facilities are at a greater risk of falls resulting in injury, disability, loss of confidence and subsequent reduction in activity as well as a decline in community participation.

Presenter 1: Dr Mia Schaumberg is a Senior Lecturer in Physiology and the Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science with UniSC. Her research focuses on lifestyle factors that help people to reduce their risk of falling. A preventative approach to falls can reduce both risk and occurrence and encompasses a variety of strategies which Mia will share with us.

Presenter 2: Jen Algie is a Physiotherapist and the Allied Health Manager at Lutheran Services Cooinda Aged Care. Jen will provide us with the current fall prevention strategies utilised within aged care. She will equip us with information on the Queensland Health Stay on your Feet Initiative and the available tools for health care providers. Importantly, she will share details on the Zane Allied Health Centre in Gympie, the services provided and how you can use this Centre to support your clients.

Topic 2: Social isolation among RACF residents and novel mitigation strategies.
There is an increased possibility of loneliness and social isolation amongst the older adult. These serious public health risks are now considered as impactful as smoking and obesity. Residents of aged care facilities have a greater likelihood of loneliness and social isolation as they are often without a spouse or partner and find themselves separated from family and friends. This presentation will share the results of a study that looked at innovative mitigation strategies to combat social isolation of residents within an aged care facility.

Presenter: Dr Apil Gurung is a Lecturer in Nursing with the UniSC. Apil has specific interests in
Gerontology, Aged Care, Primary Healthcare and Qualitative research. This will be both a fascinating and enlightening presentation on the study findings.
