In Australia up to one in three victims of intimate partner violence are male. While many services have been established to support female victims of family violence, the needs of male victims and female perpetrators of violence remain largely unmet. No direct support services, no shelters and very little understanding of the situation for male victims.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1 in 16 men have experienced physical or sexual violence at the hands of a current or previous cohabiting partner. Many more have suffered at the hands of other family members. As hard as it is for female victims to speak up when they’re affected by domestic violence, research is showing that even fewer men are seeking help when they need it.” – Relationships Australia.

The issue of men affected by violence in intimate relationships has been happening for many years and now concerned workers in all sectors are acknowledging the problem and seeking out training to support their work with male victims.
