Older Person Mental Health First Aid

Event description: Explore the identification of common mental health issues affecting older individuals, familiarize yourself with their associated signs and symptoms, learn to offer initial assistance, discover resources for obtaining professional support, delve into evidence-based effective interventions, and gain proficiency in providing emergency mental health aid. Initiating a dialogue about mental well-being with someone in distress often leaves people feeling ill at ease and ill-equipped. Acquiring the ability to discuss mental health matters, along with the confidence and knowledge to aid those in need, is a valuable skill accessible to anyone within the community. Upon successful course completion, participants have the opportunity to become Certified Mental Health First Aiders. After the course, they can undergo an online evaluation to achieve accreditation. The Older Person Mental Health First Aid course spans 12 hours and is open to any adults who have an interest in the topic, especially those who have interactions with, reside with, or provide care for elderly individuals, including family members and caregivers. During this course, participants will acquire the skills needed to provide support to individuals aged 65 and older who may be facing mental health challenges or crises, ensuring they receive appropriate professional assistance or until the crisis subsides. The approach is grounded in a practical and evidence-based action plan. This course is built upon guidelines that have been crafted through the collective expertise of individuals who have firsthand experience with mental health issues and professionals in the field.
